Cover for Business 14th October 2013

Sorry I am not in your lesson today- you should all know what you are doing as it is continuing the assessment tasks for unit 1. I am not doing the blue sheet lesson until tomorrow as it will be difficult to do with a cover teacher so:
Use the assignment sheets to complete unit 1 ( those who are on the board need to print out work for unit 2)
if you are doing the question on the local economy you will need the powerpoint slides - we have average earnings for our area

Wednesday 25 September 2013

Cover for Thursday 26th and Friday 27th September

I am really sorry to miss your final lessons before work experience. However I have left you plenty to be working through. If you get stuck I have made lots of crib sheets for you to refer to. They are stuck up around the room. "How do I tackle the Save for Me poster?" was the most asked question last lesson and completing all the questions on assignment 3 of unit 2 instead of only doing 2b was the biggest waste of someone's time. Read the overview sheet- it tells you which bits to do and which bits to miss out. Work your way through the assignments. Remember all of unit 2 needs to be completed by end of Friday and you really should be well in to unit 1. Any issues e-mail me eday6512@ocnmail.net

Monday 16 September 2013

First Assignment

Time to submit your first assignment. You will have worked together or in threes on the work and many will already have the answers to most of the questions. So...
1. Read through the assignment and check which bits you haven't completed.
2. Cut and paste your answers into a new document and then fill in the gaps.
Ensure you have completed all the questions and complete all the paperwork. Print and submit.

Aims and Objectives

Companies have aims and objectives. These aims and objectives are similar to ones we have in lessons. Personal targets translate into company targets. You may be aiming to gain GCSEs but a company may be aiming to break even or maximise their profit. They may be looking to improve customer service or sell more products.
Tasks (you can work in pairs)
1. Explain in your own words what an aim and objective is. (your text book will support this)
2. Research 3 companies: voluntary, public service and private (1 of each) and find out what their aims and objectives are and write a paragraph about each.
3. How successful have each company been in achieving their aims and objectives in 2011 or 2012?

Cover Year 11 ECD Tuesday 10th September

Students have been working on functional areas (page 47 in their textbooks).

All have tasks to complete. Most are working together which means they are quite noisy. They have enough ICT facilities.

Task 1: Describe a functional area and explain what its role in the business is?

Task 2: How does this functional area operate in a real business?

Task 3: Describe how two functional areas interact?

Task 4: Explain how the interaction of these areas supports a business to increase profit?

If students complete this ask them to go on the blog (cartertonccbusiness.blogspot.com) and find the work on aims and objectives and begin this.

Welcome Back

Welcome back Year 11- we are starting your final year and the two GCSEs that you gain from this Business course are really valuable. Please work hard to gain Distinctions and make this year a successful one. We are starting with Unit 2 Business Organisations and the functioning areas of Business. Use your textbook to support your learning and ensure you keep all notes and research in a folder labelled unit 2.

Functioning Areas in Business

Functioning areas in Businesses
A functioning area of a business is a discrete area like IT. The IT department will be responsible for all IT support, software and hardware. Other areas are like Sales, Marketing, Finance, Human Resources.. etc
Assessment criteria:
P4 describe the functioning areas in two contrasting business organisations
P5 explain how these functional areas link in one of these organisations
M2 compare the interaction of functional areas and how they relate to each other in two selected businesses to support the business objectives

Functioning areas: All businesses must carry out a number of functions to ensure the business runs smoothly. These functions also link to the aims and objectives of the business and what it wants to achieve.

Tasks:
Produce a case study on two businesses from different sectors using the questions below:
1. Choose two businesses; one from the private sector and one charity or voluntary business. Spend time researching different businesses so that you find two that make good case studies. Look at the structure of the company and consider how they market themselves; who is in charge of sales and what their business activities are?
2. Try to identify three functioning areas in both companies and write about them. Give examples of each area and the tasks that they might do?
3. What is the role of research and development in the companies?

Again many apologies but I'm in Birmingham visiting a school:

Please watch the first couple of episodes of the Dragon's Den. This is a programme that gives entrepreneurs an opportunity to gain investment for their new businesses or invention (the guy who made Reggae Reggae sauce gained his fame from Dragon's Den).

Whilst you are watching it think about the different purposes of the businesses and what makes a successful bid.

Once you have reaches this point complete an in depth case study of Morrisons. See if you can find out about the current construction project in Carterton; planning applications (WODC Planning in Google search), what about the company? aims and objectives? ethical trading? the way they treat their staff and stakeholders (CSR)?
Write a 10 question questionnaire that you use to survey Carterton residents about the store and their hopes and concerns about traffic/ noise/ pollution? Does Carterton have too many supermarkets? How will the store affect us?
Write a letter to the regional manager of Morrisons (search for their name) and ask if you would be able to shadow their first year in Carterton by a series of surveys to find out how successful the store is when it opens and in its first year.
no headphones, no food, drinks as it is hot but no energy drinks.

The tasks you need to do were explained on Tuesday. Ensure that you have completed the sheet on corporate social responsibility and the case study on the public funded and charitable business. Examples are on the board: The BBC and Oxfam are two good case studies as are the NHS and the Blue Cross.
Its important in your case study to state:
  1. what the business does
  2. what are the products they sell
  3. what are their aims and objectives
Following this look at chapter 1 in the books and complete the tasks. You will need notes of the chapter. if you complete this try the assessment activity at the end.

Website Research

You have recently been employed by internet experts WWW Online as a website consultant. WWW Online provides website and consultancy solutions for busy entrepreneurs. Shaun and Natalie own a company called FeedMe which  is a brand new internet only retailer. They would like your help to ensure their website closely matches the needs of their target market.

To begin to consider wenbsite design I want you to firstly research three different websites- of three different organisations; an online retailer like Tesc, a government website like NHS Direct and a charity website like the RSPCA.
You must create factsheets that describe these three different websites and explain how they operate their activities online. Below is an example of the research I want you to produce:

Private sector – Thomas Cook

Website address:
http://www.thomascook.com/
Organisation:
Thomas Cook
Products/services offered:
Thomas cook offers deals on flights, hotels and holidays. It is a large well known company that provides holidays for people.
Aims and objectives of the website:
The aims of this website are to sell people different holidays and encourage people with the different holiday deals.
The website is international as there are page links which direct you to the different pages for different countries. This means there is a wider market for the company.
Sector:
Thomas cook is in the private sector.
Type of website:
Thomas cook invites its customers to make online transactions.
Details:
The Thomas cook website invites its customers to make online transactions. Customers are able to search for their desired holiday and the website will show their best deals available.
User Interaction:
Users are invited to give feedback about the site and reviews for the holidays they go on.
Features used to support aims and objectives:
The website has different deals available to customers and it shows detailed information about each deal available. Also the website shows reviews from customers so that people looking for a holiday can see how good the place is.

Unit 12 Business Online

Imagine you have been asked to start a business online.
- what issues might you face and what are the operational risks for any business operating online  p312
- look at the diagram on p304 and describe the different levels of activities for businesses online; find an example of each on the internet. If you use the examples in the book then please explain for example: Amazon is an online business retailer who sell all types of products. They began by selling books and videos etc but now sell a diverse range of products.
- if you were giving advice to a business thinking of going online what advice would you give- how do they start? what skills do they need??
- what are the benefits to the customers in having businesses online- think of the benfits to shopping online and having businesses having information online. Consider how we use search engines? Have we become a nation where online shopping is more important than physical shopping?
- consider page 310.Usability and construction features and answer the question. Do the tasks individually.
